Vishnu praised the rose, while Brahma who had not seen rose, insisted on lotus. In Kashmir, the Mongol empire maintained beautiful gardens with roses which were thrown in the river to welcome the Emperors when returning from their trips.

In Persia,Nebuchadnezzar had filled his palace with roses that were being cultivated for their aromatic oil.

A Christian legend says that they were created when the blood of Jesus watered the ground beneath the cross of the martyrdom.

The rose came to Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries by the knights who returned from the Crusades and, according to the English history, after the 2nd Crusade in Syria.

It is the official flower of the United States, according to a decree signed by Ronald Reagan in November of 1986, as it was the flower of the states of Georgia, Iowa, New York, North Dakota and the Columbia region.

It is the English emblem worn on the day of St. George.

PHARMACEUTICAL PROPERTIES

Pliny the Elder recorded 32 different medicinal uses of rose in the 1st century AD.

In the middle ages, roses were cultivated more for medicine and food than for beauty.
The fruit of Rosa Rugosa was used to avoid scurvy. These fruits contain more vitamin C than any other fruit and vegetable. They are also rich in vitamins A, B, E, K and in organic acids and pectin.

Red roses Rosa gallica και Officinalis were used to treat a lot of problems.
Rosa Canina contains the highest amount of vitamin C.

Rosa Laevigata was used in China to treat diarrhea.

The petals of Rosa Gallica are used as a tonic and astringent.

Rose water reduces cholesterol. Dried rosemary tea heals headaches. Petals combined with wine are used as lukewarm compresses for the headache or hot as drops for ears.

The women even believed that rubbing petals on the skin avoid wrinkles and sustain youth. A mixture of rose water, mint and cloves helps in sleeping.

ROSE FRAGRANCE

The rose oil which is made of Damasks and Gallicas petals is very expensive. The oil used for the manufacture of different fragrances is very concentrated. It takes two tones of rose petals to produce one lb of oil and 30.000 petals to produce one ounce. Most of the currently produced rose oil is made in Bulgaria and Turkey. The Rosa Damascena is one of the basic primary roses used to make rose oil. The Centifolias species are used in France for rose oil production.

Rose fragrance comes from the peaks of the lower petals and its quantity depends on the specie and the climatic conditions. The sun and the heat are necessary for best productivity. They smell more on the sunny days and the best hour to smell a rose is in the middle of the morning when the flower is open 1/4 to 2/3. However, the more fragrant one rose is, the shorter is its life in the vase.

The fragrance of Damascena is the fragrance of love and love potions. Such old love potions were made of red and white Gallica, Albas and Forget-me-nots. By the end of the Second World War, all roses were fragrant, but more emphasis was given to their color than to the fragrance.
